mr. obama demanded republicans raise the debt ceiling this month without any spending cut strings attached. >> if congress in any way suggests they're going to tie negotiations to debt ceiling votes, and take us to the brink of default once again as part of a budget negotiation, i will not play that game. because we've got to break that habit before it starts. >> reporter: the president sees the fiscal cliff showdown as an opportunity to break that linkage for good. republicans say they will not increase the debt ceiling now $16 trillion and due to expire in february without more deficit reduction. >> history shows the only major deficit cutting deals we ever do around here, ever comes after debates over the debt ceiling. it may be a good idea if you don't care about the debt but it's a non-starter for those of us who do. >> reporter: public opinion generally is on the president's side, but republicans in the house are not paralyzed or perilous, more unified behind speaker boehner than a year ago. why is this important? the white house is beginning to notice

for not 52 weeks but one week alone. the tax increases that president obama is now trying to push through will really do almost nothing to reduce our national deficit and nothing to reduce our national debt. the white house and democrats in the senate are focused only on tax hikes while they continue ignoring the real drivers of our debt, which is the out-of-control entitlement programs -- social security, medicare, and medicaid. until we find a way to do meaningful entitlement reform, no amount of tax revenue will be able to match the increase in violate spending. -- in entitlement spending. the president continues in his campaign mode going around the country to try to sell his tax hikes. the president and the democrats in congress are willing to go over the fiscal cliff in order to get those tax hikes. rather than negotiate in good faith, they're willing to try to spend their time trying to convince the american people that it's just someone else's fault. going over the fiscal cliff will mean another recession, and this one is squarely on the shoulders of president obama. it will mean

the case is today. president obama extended them for two years. i wish he hadn't but he did. why? because it was the price he paid for getting the debt ceiling increase and for extending unemployment benefits for millions of americans. well now everything has changed. now we can -- we simply can no longer afford welfare for the rich. it is handing millionaires and billionaires a great big fat like $150,000 check a year. we can't afford it. we don't have the money. peter, as you pointed out, this is the number one issue in the election. the president made it clear at every appearance. if you want tax cuts, if you want the wealthiest of americans to pay a little more in taxes their fair share vote for me. if you want to give them a free ride, vote for romney. it's over. this issue has been decided. john boehner total total joke. i think the president -- i mean should just reject this thing out of hand and say we would rather have -- okay, here's my vote. do you agree? 1-866-55-press. my vote is no deal. no deal
